A man believed to have been attacked by a shark in Western Australia's south managed to bodysurf back to shore before friends used rope from his board as a tourniquet.

Local ambulance spokesman Dennis Bertoldo said the man, aged in his 30s, was surfing near Gracetown when he was attacked at around 8am local time on Monday. He is being transferred to the state trauma unit where he will continue his recovery.

Channel Nine reports the man was conscious and breathing when he was pulled from the water.

Surf photographer Peter Jovic was on the beach and witnessed the surfer being mauled by the shark, ABC News reported.

An ambulance headed to the scene to treat the latest victim, Jason Longgrass, who was attacked at Lefthanders surf break, near to Cobblestones surf break, where a man was bitten on the leg about 8.20am.

"There was a lot more thrashing around after that, it was pretty hard to see what was going on".

"I saw the guy who had been attacked get separated from the board and then start to paddle for an inside wave, which he managed to body surf all the way in", he added.

Speaking after the attack, that left bite marks to the bone on his leg, Mr Longgrass said he slapped the water in a bid to scare it off.

A surfer is fighting for life after being attacked by a shark, causing a nearby surfing competition to be put on hold.

The attack prompted the World Surf League (WSL) to temporarily postpone the nearby Margaret River Pro surfing contest, with lifeguards having spotted a 13-foot-long shark just off a nearby beach two hours later.

"The safety of our surfers and staff is a top priority", a spokeswoman said.

But after assessing the situation, they chose to resume the competition, with additional safety measures.

He said the incident emphasised the need to do more, including using SMART drumlines, rather than the Labor government's subsidised shark deterrent devices.

Another witness, Brett Newland, said there were about five surfers in the area when "a big shark popped up in the water amongst them".

AAP is seeking comment from Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly.

"The current policies are simply not adequate".
