Sirens will sound twice Thursday for statewide tornado drill

Sirens will sound twice across Minnesota Thursday in simulated tornado warning drills

The severe storms are capable of damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour, golfball sized hail and tornadoes are expected Saturday along and ahead of a cold front that will be moving across the region, according to a hazardous weather outlook.

The unsafe weather threat should end "prior to daybreak" on Saturday as the cold front is expected to clear the area of storms, according to forecasters. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. A firefighter reported that some of the trees on Front Street landed on power lines, and that several transformers had blown.

Today: A 20 percent chance of snow before 1 p.m.

Aside from wind and tornado damage, meteorologists are also watching for large rain and flooding issues, Owen said.

Severe weather and thunderstorms are nothing new for this time of year, as April and May are the region's peak time for severe thunderstorms.

The storms prompted thunderstorm and tornado warnings in many parishes throughout the day. Thursday, schools, businesses, and families took part in a statewide tornado drill. Warnings are issued by your local forecast office.

Unfortunately, the storms did not bring widespread rainfall.
