Mainz VAR penalty

Following a delay of around five minutes, Winkmann recalled the visiting players to give the spot kick after ruling that Daniel Brosinski's cross had been handled by Marc-Oliver Kempf.

De Blasis, who'd had to wait for Alexander Schwolow to re-take his place in goal, held his nerve to score inside the left corner as the Freiburg goalkeeper dived the other way.

Referee Guido Winkmann initially allowed the game to play on, denying Mainz a penalty, before blowing for halftime shortly thereafter.

There were freakish scenes in the Bundesliga on Monday as Mainz and Freiburg players returned to the pitch so a penalty could be taken before half-time.

Winkmann watched the incident again on the pitch-side screen and evidently decided Kempf deliberately put his hand to the ball.

The start of the second half was also delayed by more than 10 minutes as fans twice threw toilet paper into one of the goalmouths.

Mainz fans protest the Monday night contest by throwing toilet paper onto the field.

The ref maybe shouldn't have sent them off as quickly, it depends on how quickly VAR contacted him. I can't understand why referees are involved in the decision-making process at all, if it is to be used for clear and obvious errors, surely the VAR has to tell the referee what the decision is.

I still think the penalty is debatable.
