A mother scared away a black bear which attacked her five-year-old daughter outside their home in Colorado, officials have said.
Doctors at St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction say the girl is in good spirits and is surrounded by her family and stuffed animals.
"She came out ... she yelled at the animal", said CPW spokesman Mike Porras.
The girl is now in fair condition at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Paediatric surgeon Charles Breaux Jr said the bear apparently bit her but that she did not have any injuries to her brain or organs, and did not suffer any fractures. If it is captured, CPW said the bear will be put down.
"Residents are asked to secure trash, keep pet food inside and immediately report any bear sightings in this neighborhood, or any residential area", the agency said in a statement.
The bear had yet to be captured as of Sunday night.
Colorado has an estimated 17,000 to 20,000 bears, a population considered robust in a state of 5.7 million people that also attracts many tourists.
