More workers ask for mental health help

More than 70 per cent of workers in London admit to feeling stress at work

She said helping someone who may have a mental health issue is as simple as have a conversation.

Research commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation, organisers of Mental Health Awareness Week, has found that over the past year, nearly three quarters (74%) of people have at some point felt so stressed that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope.

These results mirror research which has shown that two-thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetime, and stress is a key factor in this.

"Some may not feel comfortable speaking to their manager about their mental health, but there are plenty of other ways for businesses to give people that confidence to speak up and bring their whole selves to work - after all, different things work for different people". This piece of work uses small focus groups with pupils in school settings to explore their experiences of mental health, with a view to using the findings to shape future school-based mental health interventions.

Mr Laybourn added: "People fear that opening up about their mental health will affect the way their colleagues or boss will perceive them - some even worry that this will have an impact on their career progression". On a national scale, more than two in five (41%) businesses in the United Kingdom have seen an increase in episodes of mental health compared to five years ago.

Ezra Hewing, the charity's head of mental health education, said: "Stress, if unaddressed can give rise to feelings of discomfort, anxiety, depression and trigger the symptoms of both mental and physical ill health".

Isle of Wight Radio is joining BBC and commercial radio stations around the UK to unite for the first time to broadcast a one-minute message about mental health.

There isn't a more important issue in today's workplace than people's health and well-being, and we're seeing that numerous main risks to our health are now psychological.

Note: The goal of our program is to make sure people who need help, can get it. Awareness pushes people to come forward and seek the help they need, to understand the needs of others suffering mental illness, and to push for change in the services available.

The Harbor Bridge lights will be lit green, from May 15 until May 18, in observance of Mental Health Awareness Month. The effort is part of a campaign called "Make It OK", and is created to encourage people to talk more openly about mental illnesses and ask for help.

The MoD has announced a package of support including training in listening skills for serving personnel and families, and a confidential webchat service for those on operations overseas.

Nearly half of those consulted chose mental health as the issue young people consider most important above other issues such as cyber safety.
