Foreign Ministers Of Russia, Germany Call For Iran Deal To Be Preserved
After a 90-minute meeting between Iran and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany and the European Union foreign policy chief, Mogherini said that the talks were aimed at developing concrete steps to support the Iran Nuclear Deal.
It follows a visit by the Iranian diplomat to Beijing on Sunday where he stressed the importance of keeping the accords, which were signed in 2015 with the aim of both halting Tehran's nuclear ambitions and stimulating the country's economy.
Russian Federation and Iran sought to strengthen their business ties long before the 2015 agreement, despite global sanctions in place.
Iranian hardliners are already mobilising against the government's efforts to save the nuclear deal. It also reiterated that the foreign minister is seeking "required guarantees" from the five other parties to the agreement as well as Iran's other economic parties.
Under the pact formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.
It will be hard to protect German businesses that continue doing business in Iran after the United States reimposes sanctions, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Sunday.
Speaking to the public broadcaster ARD, Beyer warned that fines and a loss of access the U.S. markets for companies in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump'sdecision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear accord could take effect as soon as "September, November".
It was an awkward visit for the newly appointed German foreign minister who recently called Russian Federation an "aggressor" and accused the Putin regime of acting "increasingly hostile".
Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said in Tehran Thursday that the two countries meant to continue "all round economic cooperation".
Independent political scientist Vladimir Sotnikov said Moscow remains less exposed to the economic consequences of United States sanctions than Europe and its companies could even benefit from the move. "It's clear that for that we have to maintain economic incentives, and that would not be easy after the USA decision" he said.
Iran's deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi on Sunday gave France, Germany and the United Kingdom 60 days to guarantee that business ties between the countries will continue, according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency. The government said the USA pullout damages US credibility on the world stage and the credibility of accords the US has signed, and puts "the present system of worldwide law in serious danger". The documents contain designs predating the deal for nuclear weapons, Israel said.
