Underwood, the former US solicitor general, is one of 13 candidates who will interview with the state Legislature beginning Tuesday afternoon in hopes of filling out the final seven months of Schneiderman's term.
It's up to the state Legislature, however, to pick someone to fill out Schneiderman's term, which expires at the end of the year.
Rep. Kathleen Rice on Tuesday withdrew from consideration to become the next state attorney general.
"I think it's an understatement to say that none of us expected to be sitting here today for this objective", Underwood told senators and Assembly members gathered Tuesday at a meeting room in the state Capitol complex.
The special committee will be chaired by Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, D-Brooklyn.
Almost every assemblymember and senator on the committee praised Underwood's credentials effusively; Democrat Senator Brad Hoylman called her a "real lawyer's lawyer".
Underwood will serve until the state Legislature appoints an interim attorney general, who, in turn, will serve until voters elect a new attorney general this fall.
Underwood went first and loomed large over the entire day of interviews. "There's some truth to that, but I can assure you that is not who I am".
Abinanti began his interview by remarking on Underwood's qualifications, calling them "superb".
"I'm not sleeping very much", she said with a laugh.
The remaining six attorney general candidates, including Humbach, Diederich and Zapesochny, will interview Wednesday. "Some people joke that the National Association of Attorneys General - NAAG - is also the National Association of Aspiring Governors".
Names floated for potential runs in November include New York City Public Advocate Tish James, considered a likely front-runner, state Sen.
Underwood, who said she was stunned by the "deeply disturbing" accusations, said she views herself as a competent caretaker who will provide continuity in the attorney general's office.
