Microsoft reportedly planning cheaper Surface tablets to compete against $329 iPad

Bloomberg: Microsoft plans lower-cost Surface tablets to battle Apple

According to a report from Bloomberg, the new 10-inch Surface tablets will feature rounded corners similar those found on Apple's iPads, and they'll also be the second Surface devices to come with a USB-C port following the Surface Book 2 a year ago.

It's possible that Microsoft may target the new Surface tablets toward the education market as an alternative to a recent move by Apple, which in March released a new iPad aimed at students and educators, for $329. Indeed, after canceling the 8-inch Surface Mini back in 2014 and leaving the 2015 Surface 3 without a successor, the company may bring a new 10-inch affordable Surface tablet to the market in the second half of 2018. The device would better compete with Apple's entry-level iPad and would return Microsoft to a market segment it abandoned when it stopped selling the Surface 3. They will also reportedly feature USB-C ports and be priced at around $400.




With 10-inch screens, the devices would be more diminutive in size than the 12-inch Surface Pro, as well as being 20 percent lighter. Bloomberg says the new models should start at about $400, but with plenty of upgrade options for more storage and cellular connectivity. Bloomberg's report claims a new 10-inch Surface will be powered by Intel instead. Like previous Surface tablets, it will feature an integrated kickstand. While iPad sales have shown some signs of slowing down, Bloomberg said Apple still sold around 44 million iPads, and brought in almost $20 billion in sales from the tablets, over the last four business quarters.
