New Featurette Goes Inside The Making Of 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'

Ron Howard reveals he turned down Star Wars The Phantom Menace in a car park

Well, you sly old dog, he's only going to get his own Star Wars Story film. You can see a little bit, but it's certainly not almost as egregious as Justice League, the new gold standard of Frankensteined blockbusters. Hats off to Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo, who discreetly stepped into the franchise to take on more action-intensive scenes for original Chewie actor, Peter Mayhew, in 2016's The Force Awakens and has since assumed the reigns nearly entirely.

Of course, the effects are something we have come to expect from the Star Wars saga and Solo has much to offer in that regard. Check. The beginning of his frienemy relationship with Lando?

Variety says, "The most important thing to note about "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is that, in spite of its widely-publicized behind-the-scenes turmoil, culminating with the replacement of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ron Howard several months into shooting, the film is not the disaster its production history might suggest".

It's a film that's battling between two different intentions.

Some Star Wars aficionados were annoyed by how much The Last Jedi subverted their expectations. The film tells us how Han got to be called Solo, but for the most part he isn't alone at all.

Does it belong in the Star Wars canon? He's the only person who could sell a stand-alone Han Solo movie.

Han is a scavenger who lives in Corellia and works for an overlord who keeps him as a slave. What this line-up lacks is a proper villain, but the entertainingly smarmy gangster who employs the crew to carry out a "hyper-fuel" heist is named Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany).

When Solo plays to its strengths, its an entertaining little adventure - little being the key word here.

Costume Designers David Crossman and Glyn Dillon said that they had to produce the most number of costumes for this one movie, compared to anything that they have done before for a "Star Wars" film. "Thrilling set-pieces, spine-tingling iconography and a Han/Chewie bromance to savour".

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens - 93%. Han Solo. Luke Skywalker. But perhaps the most encouraging thing one can say about "Solo" is that unlike "Rogue One", it not only leaves room for a possible sequel to this prequel, but finishes strongly enough that such a prospect seems enticing. "It's Casino Royale to Han Solo's James Bond".

The Han here is a lot more hopeful; a lot more chipper. Just a caution before we head into hyperdrive.

In short, it's clearly a movie made by committee with many hands on deck.

Poor Ehrenreich has been set up to fail by being given an impossible task: to make us forget about Harrison Ford, easily the most iconic action hero in modern cinema. The role is not dissimilar from those Harrelson previously played in the Hunger Games franchise or Zombieland. "There's enough here to satisfy the fan base and give Disney a very strong turnout", he wrote.

The other strike against the film is that for a not insignificant amount of its running time, the visuals are surprisingly bad.

What do you know? It's an especially murky experience in the first 30 minutes of the film, where everything is cast in various shades of grey and muddy, grimy exterior.

Following the publication of our article, Lucasfilm informs us that there would have been a misunderstanding between our journalist and Kathleen Kennedy. He belongs in a better movie, but at least he perks this one up. His work can also be found at GeekRex.com and can be heard on the GeekRex podcast.
