Scot Peterson's $8K-plus pension: It pays to be cowardly

Lori Alhadeff and Ryan Petty's daughters, Alyssa Alhadeff and Alaina Petty, both 14 years old, were among the 17 students and staff killed in the Valentine's Day mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Instead, the parents were somber as they spoke of their sense of duty to make schools safer almost three months after a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School left their children dead.

"I want to do everything possible to make this school system a model that other districts will look and try to replicate", Alhadeff said.

"There is a lot more to do, and that's why I'm filing to run for school board, so I can have a seat at table, so I can represent parents all over the district who deserve to have their children come home to them every afternoon after school", Petty said.

Both campaigns are linked to Broward Parents for Better and Safer Schools, a political action committee led by Democratic consultants that was set up after the shooting.

"It's become pretty clear the district's policies are confusing and are applied haphazardly, and that means we have kids falling through the cracks, and that poses a threat to our students and teachers", Petty said.

"The PROMISE program needs to be revamped", Alhadeff said Tuesday.

Alhadeff will be going up against Abby Freedman, and Petty will be going up against Donna Korn. It is my duty to make sure these schools are safe.

"I want to ensure schools provide safety and a quality education, and there is transparency and accountability", Alhadeff told the Sun Sentinel. "As a school board member, I'm going to ask the tough questions", she said.

But she and Petty do not favor firing Runcie. Now, two of their parents are running for the Broward County school board, ABC News reports.

Campaign officials for Alhadeff and Petty say that while the two are supporting each other's candidacy, they're not involved in other School Board races.
