Ukraine's state security service searched the Kiev offices of Russia's state-run RIA Novosti news agency and TV channel RT on Tuesday after detaining one journalist near his home, officials said.

The SBU said the raids were part of its investigation into Russian media outlets being "used as tools of a hybrid war against Ukraine".

On May 15, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) carried out a large-scale operation against RIA Novosti Ukraine staff members, accusing them of high treason.

Relations between Moscow and Kiev soured in 2014 when Russian Federation annexed Ukraine's Crimea and threw its weight behind separatists in jap Ukraine.

A spokeswoman for the SBU, Elena Gitlyanskaya confirmed that the SBU conducted searches at the Kiev office of Russian news agency RIA Novosti today. The SBU and prosecutors had uncovered the illegal activity of a Russian-controlled media chain in Ukraine. "We also call on Ukrainian authorities to stop harassing and obstructing Russian media operating in Ukraine". Russia Foreign Ministry has sent notes of protest to Ukraine over the situation with journalists, Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on May 16 that "Russia categorically rejects such treatment of its citizens, especially if they work for media outlets and if their freedom is limited and severe accusations are brought for reasons of their professional activity".

Up to 15 journalists work for RIA Novosti in Ukraine, some of whom transmit information to its headquarters in Moscow while others, led by Vyshynsky, are in charge of the ria.com.ua website for the Ukrainian audience.

At the same time, Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of the Sputnik news agency, has stated that she thought what was happening in Ukraine was Kiev's "revenge" for the recently opened Crimea Bridge.
