Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai branded 'real cow' by Israeli Prime Minister
Twenty thousand adoring fans gathered in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square on Monday night to welcome home Israel's victor of the 2018 Eurovision song contest Netta Barzilai and attend a free performance in honor of her historic win on Sunday.
"It's a moment of joy that makes everybody together, it's a consensus", saidIzhar Cohen, who won Israel's first Eurovision crown 40 years ago.
"Together we will expose the lovely face of Jerusalem to the whole world", he said. Those votes are combined to give each country a single score. The declarations and policies against Israel, including the refusal to recognize Jerusalem as our Capital City are unprecedented, something that never happens to any other country.
She also voiced her concerns that a Pride march like one in the Tel Aviv wouldn't be allowed in Russian Federation. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, a position with wide worldwide backing.
It had been considered impossible with the anti-Israel sentiment/policy in Europe for Israel to get enough top votes to win, no matter how good the song/performance. Thank you. I love my country.
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrated the win mimicking Netta's dance moves.
Today is Jerusalem Day, the date on the Jewish Calendar when a large part of our Historic, Biblical Homeland was liberated in the 1967 Six Days War after thousands of years of occupation, most recently by Jordan. "We got another one last night with Netta's brilliant and explosive victory". "The gift is that the Eurovision will come to Jerusalem next year". But even this ludicrous spectacle wasn't spared the hot-take treatment, with some commentators playing up the fact that the song was supposedly inspired by the #MeToo movement.
Despite tensions, the Eurovision contest remains a talent show where the unexpected, the spectacular and the original stand a chance of winning regardless of politics.
Roni, 11, said everyone was talking about Netta in school, and that she and her friends did learn an important message from the song.
"I'm so happy. Thank you so much for choosing difference".
Barzilai, a plus-sized 24-year-old, said "Toy" was a celebration of diversity and a protest against the objectification of women and body shaming.
She went on to say that if Britain is asked to enter the renowned competition next year the reply ought to be: "Nah, you're all right!"
