Stan Lee files billion-dollar lawsuit against POW! Entertainment
16 May 2018, 04:44 | Regina Holmes
Stan Lee Is Suing Pow! Entertainment, The Company He Co-Founded, For $1 Billion
In a complaint filed today in Los Angeles, legendary comic creator Stan Lee is suing Pow! The suit says they "conspired and agreed to broker a sham deal to sell POW! to a company in China and fraudulently steal Stan Lee's identity, name, image, and likeness as part of a nefarious scheme to benefit financially at Lee's expense". Entertainment CEO Shane Duffy and co-founder Gill Champion failed to fully disclose to Lee details of the firm's sale past year to Hong Kong-based Camsing International. The company was sold to Chinese company Camsing International Holding Limited past year, the complaint notes. "Inc. the exclusive use of Lee's identity, name, image and likeness".
Lee's attorney Jonathan Freund has denied the allegations to the Chicago Tribune newspaper.
Lee, who last month filed a case against his former manager Jerardo Olivarez for business fraud, has added him in the suit but not as defendent. He even refused to give it to Disney.
The complaint, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and published by several USA entertainment media outlets, alleges that POW! He was also grieving over the death of his wife, Joan.
Lee claims he doesn't recall anyone reading the document to him (which is essential as Lee's macular degeneration has rendered him legally blind). "In addition, POW! took control of Lee's personal social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, thereby impersonating Lee before a combined 15 million followers worldwide".
Lee explained that he would not have knowingly signed the licence and that he suspects someone induced him into signing the document by using a "bait and switch" tactic, telling Lee that the document was something else.
"From now on, I will depend on you, my dear fans, to protect and defend me", he added. I love you guys and am so happy I have control of my Twitter account back. You guys are my true superheroes.
The suit "seeks damages in excess of $1 billion".
Meanwhile, Lee made a recent appearance at the Avengers: Infinity War premiere in Los Angeles at the end of April, his first public appearance since he revealed he's battling pneumonia in late February to TMZ. This latest lawsuit is just the latest in a string of odd occurrences in Lee's personal and professional life.
