Iran diplomat visits China for talks on nuclear deal crisis

Iran's FM Mohammad Javad Zarif Visits Beijing, Russia and Europe to Save Nuclear Deal

Zarif's diplomatic tour took him to Beijing at the weekend and will see him visit Brussels later in the week, as the worldwide backers of the 2015 accord scrabble to save it.

His hourlong meeting with Mogherini was in preparation of a wider discussion later on May 15 with the foreign ministers of three other European Union partners in the landmark deal: Germany, France, and Britain.

"We will see how (European countries) would guarantee that Iran's interests will be protected if Teheran remains in the agreement", said the Iranian Foreign Minister.

"We will have to see whether (those) remaining in the JCPOA can deliver those benefits to Iran", he said on arrival in Brussels.

Iran's conservative opposition is aligning increasingly against the deal.

The two leaders reiterated their commitment to the Iran accord in the phone call, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that Russia would do its best to keep the JCPOA in place, despite Washington's plans to resume the anti-Iranian sanctions.

Speaking after a bilateral meeting with EU's Federica Mogherini on Tuesday, Zarif said he had good and constructive talks with her.

After the Chinese capital, Zarif will attend talks in Moscow and Brussels with representatives of the pact's other signatories.

Zarif will be visiting China first, then Russian Federation.

Speaking on Sunday in Beijing, Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined Tehran's readiness "for all options" but expressed optimism that this round of negotiations could save the 2015 deal. Following the meeting Zarif said he was hopeful of forging a "clear future design" for the accord.

Iran on Sunday gave the European Union 60 days to guarantee the continued implementation of the nuclear deal after the US decision to leave.

France intends to remain in the Iran nuclear accord and still believes that it can prevent Tehran acquiring nuclear weapons, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Sunday.

"For the first time, Iran has the chance to show the world they are not the rogue nation they are always presented as, that they negotiated in good faith and keep to their commitments", said Karim Emile Bitar of the Institute for global and Strategic Studies in Paris.

Meanwhile, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had spoken to his German, French, and British counterparts in recent days to discuss cooperation over Iran.

Iranian officials have said they hope Europe will work with them to preserve the deal.

But while he talked up the prospect of renewed coordination with America's allies, another top aide reminded Europe its companies could face sanctions if they continue to do business with the Middle Eastern power.
