Massive dust storm hits Delhi-NCR again IMD issues fresh warning

A powerful dust storm accompanied with rain and squall hit Delhi-NCR this morning. However, there are no reports of causalities so far.

At least 34 people were killed and 47 injured when thunderstorms swept Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, displacing hundreds of people, Sanjay Kumar, relief commissioner for the state, told Reuters by telephone from Lucknow, the state capital, adding that the casualty figures might rise. Now reports are coming that more than 80 people have died because of this thunderstorm or lightning strikes attacks in five states since last Sunday.

New Delhi woke up to strong winds accompanied by dust Wednesday, May 16, and the weather is likely to remain the same for a while.

Earlier yesterday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a fresh warning for heavy rains and thunderstorm in the next two hours in the National Capital Region (NCR). Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the IMD had predicted that the wind speeds could reach approximately 74 km per hour.




Power distribution company BSES Delhi said it had put its teams on high-alert and were trying to restore power disruptions in some areas.

The Met office predicts storm and winds of less severity for 48 hours starting Tuesday.

The latest devastation comes almost two weeks after dust and thunderstorm claimed 134 lives injured 400 people in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Punjab on May 2.

Uttar Pradesh witnessed thunderstorm and hail that left at least 18 people dead, while 12 people including four children were killed in West Bengal, nine in Andhra Pradesh, and two in Delhi, officials said.
