Twitter is finally doing something about trolls -- using 'behavioral signals'
The move is a global one, and is created to deal with behaviour that doesn't breach Twitter's usage policies, but doesn't add anything either.
But the company adds: "Because this content doesn't violate our policies, it will remain on Twitter, and will be available if you click on "Show more replies" or choose to see everything in your search setting".
When Twitter considers an account to be engaged in "trolling" bad behavior, it will display their tweets less and hide them in conversations.
In other words, if your behavior is considered "troll-like" by Twitter, it will be harder for other users to find your posts on the platform.
Twitter said that it now uses policies, human review processes and machine learning to determine how tweets are organised and presented in communal areas such as conversations and search.
"Some of these accounts and Tweets violate our policies, and, in those cases, we take action on them", he continued.
Twitter has revealed that it is using new tools, including machine learning, to identify signals that indicate when trolls are about to ruin a conversation.
The Twitter executives said that less than 1pc of accounts make up the majority of accounts reported for abuse, but that a lot of what's reported does not violate the company's rules.
In March, the company specifically began focusing on trolls-many of whom aren't even violating the platform's policies, but are substantially detracting from engaging conversation. The firm has come under fire in recent years for how it handles reports of abuse by other users and has made a series of changes aimed at addressing that.
Our work is far from done.
The company now uses a mixture of machine learning, human review processes and policies to determine how tweets are organised in conversations and search.
Twitter announced today a new battle plan to combat trolls who "distort and detract from the public conversation".
Twitter said it has tested the new approach and saw reductions in abuse complaints in conversations and in search.
Twitter says that while many posts do not break its rules, many are still be in poor taste or offensive to a large number of users.
"There will be false positives and things that we miss".
In the blog post, Twitter said: "This technology and our team will learn over time and will make mistakes". Our goal is to learn fast and make our processes and tools smarter. "We are making progress as we go", Dorsey said.
