Amazon's Alexa Voice Assistant comes to Android smartphones

You can now make Amazon Alexa as default voice assistant on your Android phone

Hello Alexa! HP's new PC expected to come with built-in digital assistant app

The online retail giant said Wednesday that developers can now apply to test the voices, which were built to sound like U.S. English speakers.

United States investment bank Morgan Stanley is sharing information, including market insights, with customers via the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.

Polly's voices are far from ideal, of course, but as they see more use, that could change.

Amazon Polly enables developers to provide their applications with an enhanced visual experience such as speech-synchronized facial animation or karaoke-style word highlighting. Polly will let skill developers choose from eight different English voices and a wide variety of non-English voices.

It should be noted that developers can already add multiple voices to their skills, but it's a more complex process that involves recording a voice as an audio file. Just like with Siri and Google Assistant, Android smartphone users will be able to talk to Alexa using the Alexa app on their smartphones.

Amazon announced a developer preview for adding eight Amazon Polly voices to Alexa skills. "You can even use an Amazon Polly voice for every utterance in your skill if you like". Additionally, you can leverage Amazon Polly's API to deliver automated real-time information such as service status, account and billing inquiries, addresses, and contact information. Chiefly, it's the text-to-speech service which helps create the scripts for Alexa skills.
