A school bus and a dump truck collided this morning on I-80 westbound in Morris County, N.J., according to authorities. It happened around 9:30 a.m. with a bus carrying middle school students from the Paramus school district. A piece of the front end, with the steering wheel visible, was laying on top of the metal barrier separating the highway from the median.
Fire fighters were seen working on one side of the bus around an hour after the crash. There was also damage to the back of the bus.
A red dump trump with a crushed front end was parked nearby along the highway.
About 40 students were on the bus at the time, ABC New York station WABC-TV reported. Family members tell Eyewitness News the bus was headed to Waterloo Village as part of a field trip for fifth graders. A school district official said its superintendent was preparing a statement.
A sign outside of the East Brook Middle School in Paramus, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the crash site, informed people to go to the auditorium for updates on the accident. The eastbound right and center lanes have reopened. Numerous emergency vehicles and civilians are at the scene, apparently responding to injured victims.
State police said an unknown number of children were on the bus. But the parent of one of the students tells News 12 New Jersey that his daughter had such a bad concussion that she gave the hospital the wrong name when she was taken in. She said they were being evaluated and treated, but she did not have ages or conditions.
Hackettstown Medical Heart advised Information 12 New Jersey they're receiving 10 sufferers from the crash.
