Webb Simpson wins Players Championship; Justin Thomas ousts Dustin Johnson as World No.1

Justin Thomas Overtakes Dustin Johnson as World's No.1 Golfer

Justin Thomas finished only one stroke ahead of Dustin Johnson at the Players Championship on Sunday, but that will be enough to move the former Alabama standout to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking when the list for this week is released on Monday.

This is the first time in his career that Thomas will be ranked No. 1.

The Players Championship just concluded this weekend at TPC Sawgrass, and Webb Simpson took home the title.

Thomas finished with his best round of the week in Florida, shooting a six-under 66 to finish 11 under.

Since the world rankings were introduced in 1986, 21 players have held the position of World No 1 and by definition all of them have been fine players but it is longevity there which sets certain players apart.

The 2017 US PGA Championship victor said: "It's important, but it's not something where it's like I just want to do it once".

Thomas is the reigning PGA Championship victor, and Webb Simpson's victory Sunday gives the USA control of the four majors and The Players for the first time in 17 years.

"It feels deserved for how I've played but, at the same time, if I get hot for a year or two, have it and then fall off the map, that doesn't really mean a whole lot to me".

This season's highlights for Thomas include a PGA Tour victory at the Honda Classic, a second-place finish at the World Golf Championships Mexico Championship and a fourth-place showing at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.
