Australia was not represented among the diplomats from the more than 30 countries present at the high-profile ceremony, with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop telling The AJN that ambassador Chris Cannan was not in Israel at the time.

On Monday - the day the USA embassy in the capital opened - Israeli soldiers fired at Palestinians gathered near the Gaza border fence, killing men, women, and children.

The clashes came on the 70th anniversary of Israel's founding, with loudspeakers on Gaza mosques urging Palestinians to join a "great march of return". Many others were injured by gunfire.

Ireland has called for an independent worldwide investigation into the deaths, with the United Nations taking the lead.

The Russian top diplomat stated that Moscow was ready to fully facilitate dialogue between Palestine and Israel on the Jerusalem issue.

"We started to line up altogether and then walk forward steps together".

"This proves what so many have tried to ignore: Hamas is behind these riots, and the branding of the riots as "peaceful protests" could not be further from the truth", said IDF spokeman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, according to the Times of Israel.

Israel's military dropped leaflets into the enclave on Monday, warning Palestinians "not to serve as a tool of Hamas" or approach or damage Israel's frontier fence. Gunshots were fired in the air.

Israeli forces killed 59 Palestinians during clashes and protests along the Gaza border on Monday against the USA embassy opening in Jerusalem in the conflict's bloodiest day in years.

Near the boundary fence, 51-year-old Nasser Ghurab and 18-year-old Bilal Hussein were killed by Israeli forces, said Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesman for the Palestinian Health Ministry.

During the war surrounding Israel's creation in 1948, more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes. It also triggered a diplomatic backlash against Israel.

"Hamas tell themselves, instead of having people revolt and turn against us, we'll send them to the fence and let them "revolt" there freely", he said.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that the United Nations had "collapsed" in the face of events in Gaza, accusing the worldwide community of failing to react.

The letter asks the administration to reinstate its funding for the United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees and to support proposals that build the economy in Gaza and encourage the flow of goods and people in and out of the territory.

US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley made quite the statement on the Middle East at Tuesday's Security Council meeting - and it had nothing to do with her speech.

Two hours before market close, Tel Aviv Stock Exchange's TA-35 and TA-125 indexes are both up about half a percent, even as shockwaves from the previous day's events in Gaza and Jerusalem continue to emanate around the world.

Gaza has been controlled since 2007 by Hamas, an Islamist group that denies Israel's right to exist and has fought three wars with Israel in the past decade.

"Rather, the violence comes from those who reject the existence of the state of Israel in any location", Haley said.
