Breaking News: Big Update On The WWE RAW & SmackDown TV Deals
With the rumors that FOX is looking to acquire the WWE, one of the topics that Barrios brought up was could WWE programming exist within networks of two separate companies. It turns out they are keeping Raw on their networks but due to the fact Raw is worth so much they're not going to keep the Blue Brand around.
FS1 host Colin Cowherd, a longtime WWEdetractor, joined some of the company's executives at SmackDown on February 27 when the show was out in Los Angeles.
While that sounds like a problem for WWE, it's more of an embarassment of riches. According to the report, NBCUniversal is said to be close to renewing the deal for RAW at three times its current value. It also airsNFL, MLB, soccer, U.S. Open golf, NASCAR and other sports.
However in 2019 the current TV deal between the WWE and NBCUniversal is expiring and this could change the landscape for Smackdown Live. After five years away from USA, Raw moved back on October 3, 2005, and has aired there ever since. It debuted on the broadcast television network UPN in 1999, before moving to the CW Network in 2006.
SmackDown Live has aired on USA Network since July 2016, and it has been under the NBCUniversal umbrella dating back to 2010, when it was on Syfy. The show has taken a number of incarnations over the year, airing taped or live during different phases and switching between Thursday, Friday and Tuesday nights. At the time, US aired five hours of live WWE programming a week; WWE programming now airs two nights a week on USA.
