Didier Deschamps explains Lacazette and Martial omissions from France World Cup squad

Both players are on the stand-by list but don’t make the 23-man squad

Anthony Martial axed from France World Cup squad on eve of FA Cup final

Didier Deschamps says he omitted both Alexandre Lacazette and Anthony Martial from his France World Cup squad because he has too many striking options to choose from.

"He played the first half-hour (against Atletico), but he aggravated his injury, and the recovery time needed for that type of injury is three weeks", Deschamps said after revealing his squad live on television station TF1's evening news programme.

So too did Dimitri Payet, perhaps as a result of his limping out of Wednesday's UEFA Europa League final.

After returning from injury at the end of Manchester City's record-breaking Premier League title success, Benjamin Mendy has done enough to earn a place, although team-mate Aymeric Laporte - City's record signing - misses out.

Lacazette and Martial are both on a standby list of 11 players with United winger Martial having 18 caps and starting France's 3-1 friendly victory over Russian Federation in March.

Another player to miss out was Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny, who ruptured an Achilles tendon playing against Atletico in the Europa League semi-finals.

As expected, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is not in the squad after being snubbed since being involved in a sex tape-blackmail scandal in 2015.

The 29-year-old Nzonzi has just two caps.

Midfielders: Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Corentin Tolisso (Bayern Munich), Blaise Matuidi (Juventus), N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Steven N'Zonzi (Sevilla). I put the group on top of everything and from there, I make choices that in my opinion are for the good of the France team.

Les Bleus were drawn alongside Australia, Denmark and Peru in Group C, and are the heavy favourites to advance to the knockout stages.

Before heading to Russian Federation, they will play three home friendlies, starting against the Republic of Ireland at the Stade de France on May 28.
