Lawsuits threaten to derail Musk's Los Angeles tunnel
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is bringing his technology charm offensive to an attempt at digging a tunnel beneath part of Los Angeles to test designs for a high-speed subterranean transportation network he envisions for the city. On Thursday night in Brentwood, Elon Musk explained his plan to alleviate traffic.
A report from the Culver City manager's office stated: 'The Boring Company has proposed a privately funded human transportation tunnel that would run underneath the Westside of Los Angeles. Last week, he showed off the first Boring Company tunnel under Los Angles, saying it's nearly done and awaiting regulatory approvals.
It is unknown how fast the "electric skates" will go during tests on the public. During a Thursday night session that lasted almost an hour, Musk and the Boring Company's project leader, Steve Davis, laid out their case for building a network of tunnels 30 feet or more beneath Los Angeles, starting with a 2.7-mile "proof of concept" dig.
Earlier, Musk hinted that he plans to link the hyperloop project under his start-up The Boring Company with SpaceX's rockets to create a transportation system that may ferry people anywhere on Earth in less than an hour.
You won't have to wait much longer for that Boring Company flamethrower. The project would involve hundreds of entrances where travelers in pods could descend to the network of tunnels that will shuttle them at high speeds across the city.
Known for aggressively taking on large-scale technical challenges with which he has had little previous experience, Musk ended his pitch on a humble note, telling the audience that realising his vision "could only happen with public support".
The Boring Co. has already cleared some regulatory hurdles for the tunnel along Sepulveda Boulevard, which would connect with a two-mile test track that's under construction in Hawthorne across from SpaceX headquarters.
After users suggested he was joking, Musk clarified: "I am actually going to do this". "In our mind, you won't hear us, you won't see us, you won't feel us, you won't even know we exist", Davis said.
