Leonardo DiCaprio & Steven Spielberg May Reteam for Ulysses S. Grant Biopic
You know what the good, movie-going people of this world are clamoring for Hollywood to give us?
According to reports, he's in talks with Lionsgate to come on board a movie about Ulysses S. Grant, the civil war hero and the 18th president of the United States.
Spielberg has form in the presidential biopic, of course. He has directed DiCaprio in 2002's Catch Me if You Can.
It is unclear where this project would fall on Spielberg's already packed schedule. Sources told Deadline that production companies Lionsgate and Appian Way, which acquired the film rights to Grant past year, see the production of the movie as a priority. Both men are said to be in early discussions on the project.
The film would be adapted from the Ron Chernow biography after Lionsgate and Appian Way acquired movie rights to Grant towards the end of 2017.
For Spielberg, Grant could offer the opportunity to reframe the U.S. Civil War. DiCaprio, now hopefully well and truly recovered from The Revenant, is getting back into the Quentin Tarantino game with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The 71 year old director has recently released the well-received Ready Player One, and is now preparing to film Indiana Jones 5, as well as working on DC Comics' Blackhawk and a re-make of West Side Story. Down on his luck with failing businesses and a resignation from the army amid accusations of drunkenness, Grant enjoyed a rousing second act as Abraham Lincoln's most trusted general. Grant crossed paths with other notable names from history of course, crossing strategic sabres with Robert E. Lee, stamping out the Ku Klux Klan, and collaborating with Mark Twain throughout his life.
