Active Shooter Is Reported at Santa Fe, Tex., High School

LIVE: Active shooting confirmed at Santa Fe High School; lockdown initiated

The latest reports of a possible shooting at a US school underscored a national debate over gun control and gun rights that intensified after an assailant killed 17 students and staff members in February at high school in Parkland, Florida. Other schools in the district are resuming normal activities.

"The situation is active, but has been contained", the Santa Fe Independent School District said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Houston-area media citing unnamed law enforcement officials are reporting that there are fatalities following a shooting at a local high school Friday morning.

A suspect is in custody, and "a second one detained", Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

One student told Houston television station KTRK in a telephone interview that a gunman came into her first-period art class and started shooting.

"We were all standing (outside), but not even five minutes later, we started hearing gunshots", she said. "Everybody started screaming and running", she said. "And next thing you know, we just hear ... three gunshots, loud explosions, and all the teachers are telling us to run". She said she could not identify the shooter because she was in a hurry to escape the classroom.

The student said she didn't get a good look at the shooter because she was running away.

Leila Butler, a sophomore at the school, told ABC13, a local affiliate, that fire alarms at the school went off at about 7:45 a.m.

There was a large law enforcement response to the same school in February when it was placed on lockdown after students and teachers said they heard "popping sounds". Douglas Hudson earlier told the Associated Press units are responding to reports of shots fired but could not give further details. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location.

A spokesman for the police department in Santa Fe, about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Houston, said officers were "still establishing the scene". The city has about 13,000 residents, and the high school has 1,400 students.
