A man was arrested at Melbourne Airport on Thursday after he ran across the tarmac then tried to rip open the door of

The man then started smoking inside the airport terminal and at about 9.30am he rushed to the nearest gate where he pushed past staff and ran onto the tarmac.

The incredible scene occurred at Melbourne airport on Thursday morning, when Australia Federal Police were called in response to an incident on Terminal 4.

The flight was delayed at the least an hour as engineers look at the plane.

A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting crew and breaching security to try to get on a plane. He was travelling to Adelaide, but the locked plane was headed for Sydney.

The alleged offender was then filmed trying to rip open the front door of the Jetstar aircraft before restrained by baggage handlers.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers took the person into custody, and have since charged him with one depend of illegal assault of an airline worker.

Witness Susannah Leigh Murray told 9News that she was waiting to get on the flight when she saw the drama unfold.

A Jetstar spokesman said the man had assaulted several crew members.




A Jetstar spokeswoman told The West Online that its baggage handlers, went above and beyond to restrain the man.

The passenger was banned from flying again with the low-priced carrier and or its mother company, Qantas Airlines.

More charges may be laid against the man, who is also reported to have enjoyed a cigarette inside the airport before charging the aircraft.

In October a year ago, police used stun guns to detain a man who attempted to storm a flight during a security breach at Melbourne Airport.

"This behavior is unacceptable and we have placed an immediate ban on this passenger travelling on all Jetstar and Qantas flights", said a representative for the airline.

The man then attempted to board a Jetstar 787 Dreamliner but was confronted by the pilot before being Tasered by police and detained.
