Abortion Referrals Would Cause Clinics to Lose Federal Funds Under New Trump Rule

Trump Administration to Propose New Curbs on Abortion

The policy was rescinded under President Bill Clinton, and a new rule went into effect that required "nondirective" counselling to include a range of options for women.

She said requiring family planning clinics to be physically separate from facilities in which abortion is provided would disrupt services for women across the country.

The Trump administration is resurrecting a Reagan-era rule that would ban federally funded family planning clinics from discussing abortion with women, or sharing space with abortion providers.

Effectively, the rule would strip Planned Parenthood of some of its funding, although Congress appropriated roughly $500 million to the organization in the $1.3 trillion March omnibus.

As one Trump administration official told CNN, "Any grantees that perform, support or refer for abortion have a choice - disentangle themselves from abortion or fund their activities with privately raised funds".

Medicaid money, which is the bulk of the federal funds Planned Parenthood receives, would not be affected by the new proposal, according to Bloomberg.

Although there are already laws present that prevent federal funds to directly finance abortions, nonprofit organizations like Planned Parenthood do accept federal money for services like annual checkups and screenings. In response, the abortion lobby has only doubled down further in its narrative that abortion is "health care".

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a group that opposes abortion rights, thanked Trump for the move in a statement Thursday night.

Title X, however, is only a minor portion of Planned Parenthood's taxpayer funding.

"Planned Parenthood and other abortion centers will now have to choose between dropping their abortion services from any location that gets Title X dollars and moving those abortion operations offsite", he added.

Conservative and anti-abortion groups have increased pressure on the administration in recent weeks to reform the Title X program as a way to cut away at funding for Planned Parenthood.

Another leak from the Trump administration reveals that Trump is planning to place additional restrictions on abortion clinics. "They won't get birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, or even general women's health exams", Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens said. "You can really see how insidiously entangled the abortion industry is in our government-run healthcare programs when abortion allies in Congress get apoplectic because family planning programs don't include a sales pitch to end the lives of family members".
