Van Marwijk's Socceroos selection headaches

Australia on Friday routed the Czech Republic 4-0 in a tune-up friendly ahead of the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup as ageing Tim Cahill continued to be embroiled in controversy.

Cahill is going to his fourth tournament, after debuting in Germany in 2006, while captain Mile Jedinak will play in his third World Cup.

Nevertheless, Australia's dreamers are counting down to next month's World Cup in Russian Federation more in hope than expectation of progressing to the knockout stages.

The victory over a Czech side that failed to qualify for the tournament in Russian Federation was the first for the Socceroos outside Australia since a 1-0 win over the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi in September 2016.

The Australian players, a disparate group playing mostly in leagues around Europe and Asia, have been gradually assembling in Turkey after completing club commitments across 13 countries.

Maclaren is one of five forwards - including Juric and the 38-year-old Tim Cahill who, the coach admitted was "a special case" as he aims to play in his fourth World Cup finals - in the 23-man squad.

The Hibernian striker was a part of Bert van Marwijk's 32-man squad, but wasn't named as part of a lead-up training camp.

This was Australia's first friendly match since their 0-0 draw against Colombia on March 27 and after Aussie coach Ange Postecoglou's resignation. "I have enough central defenders and defending midfield players the same", he said.

"I told them as we started that this moment will come".

A knee injury to first-choice striker Tomi Juric concerned van Marwijk enough to call in Maclaren from holidays, where he had six days to win the Dutchman over a second time.

The 38-year-old Cahill is his country's most prolific global scorer with 50 goals and has scored at his three previous World Cups.

In Milos Degenek, van Marwijk believes he has enough depth in the Socceroos' problem position, casting the Sydney FC midfielder and the unknown Croatia youth worldwide aside.

"You must not be too satisfied because we also made mistakes".

"I have been very pleased with the effort and application of all of the players during our time in Turkey, and in Austria", van Marwijk said.
