Mexico initiates WTO dispute, following Canada, EU

Tensions are also running high between Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the two have been butting heads over the recent steel and aluminum tariffs implemented on imports coming from Canada. Canada, which was a British colony at the time, did not gain independence until 1867.

Over the past week, Trudeau has been especially critical of Trump's decision to impose tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminum.

Mexico plans to tax about $3 billion worth of USA goods, including whiskey, cheese and pork. "That Canada could be considered a national security threat to the United States is inconceivable", Trudeau said, according to the Associated Press.

"Trump's trying to fix this broken system", the President's top economic adviser Mr Larry Kudlow told journalists at the White House on Wednesday.

In 2009, the Mexican government slapped tariffs on political important goods to protest the US's refusal to abide by North American Free Trade Agreement rules on trucking.

Japan is also expected to take a less confrontational approach than its G7 peers, while still quietly pressing its case on trade.

Kudlow said allies should understand that Trump "will do what is necessary to protect the USA, its businesses and its workforce", adding that Trump "has always said, and I agree, tariffs are a tool in that effort". Every other G7 country plans on launching retaliatory tariffs against United States goods.

"There is a strong risk of overstating the importance of tariffs. many other things matter as well", said Sean Doherty, head of worldwide trade and investment at the World Economic Forum.

The White House declined to comment and the National Security Council did not immediately return a CNN request for comment.

But Canada, which is a country that buys more U.S. goods and services than it exports here, also will put tariffs on a wide variety of consumer products, ranging from ballpoint pens and dishwasher detergent to toilet paper and playing cards. Describing the tense three days, Bruno Le Maire, France's finance and economy minister, said it was "far more a G-6 plus one than a G-7".

But as historical experts pointed out soon after details of the call were released, Canada did not burn down the White House. Under that principle, British officers would board US vessels and force (often former) British sailors to work for them instead, which resulted in the 1807 USS Chesapeake incident in which three American sailors were killed and 16 wounded.

The shortlist is created to add political pressure on USA swing state districts with economies dependent on the export of goods to Canada.

The other 6 members of the G7 are holding out hope they can find common ground with Trump, but are prepared to stand up to United States protectionism. Mexico, like Canada and the European Union, is a USA ally, and the announcement didn't go over well.

The problem with that war especially is that it proves exactly what Trump probably didn't want to imply: trade disputes can easily get out of control.

Trump's top economic adviser Larry Kudlow hinted Wednesday that the us might not comply with unfavorable WTO rulings.

"This is not your typical trade dispute", Freeland said Wednesday night before insisting the American tariffs are "ridiculous" and "illegal" under global trade rules.

With his new tariffs increasing USA isolation, Trump heads to Canada on Friday for a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized nations.

Trump defended his decision on tariffs on Canada and other USA allies in a tweet over the weekend.

It was the understanding of Canadians officials at the time that this would satisfy the Trump administration and allow for Canada to receive a permanent exemption from tariffs.
