Speaker Ryan Sides with Gowdy over Nunes and Pours Cold Water on Trump's Unfounded 'Spygate' Claim

Speaker Ryan Dismisses Trump’s Charges of a Spy in his Campaign

Lame duck House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday disputed President Donald Trump's claims that he had the constitutional authority to pardon himself.

"I have seen no evidence to the contrary of the initial assessment that Chairman Gowdy has made", Ryan said Wednesday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Giuliani said that the Justice Department's offer to hold a briefing for members of Congress about the informant and his contacts with the Trump campaign was insufficient for the president's legal team.

The Speaker also left himself room to eventually backtrack, if he ever discovers evidence that confirms the deep state embedded a spy in the Trump campaign (then craftily declined to use any of the information they collected to keep Trump out of office).

But if you think Gowdy and Ryan's comments would be enough to prompt Trump's House Republican supporters to move on, think again. "As chairman Nunes said just the other day, if we had the information we were looking for, we could wrap this up faster". "I want to make sure that we run every lead down and make sure we get final answers to these questions". The official said they would provide new documents and also "the documents that were available for review but not inspected by the members at the previous briefing".

Asked about Trump's assertion that he has the power to pardon himself in the event Robert Mueller's collusion probe finds dirt on him, Ryan added: 'Obviously, the answer is he shouldn't, and no one is above the law'. "Let me say it this way: I think Chairman Gowdy's initial assessment is accurate". Instead, some are carrying water for a Justice Department that has already resisted congressional oversight, misrepresented material facts to a FISA court, improperly redacted documents and failed to disclose spying on a presidential campaign.

Gaetz concluded saying that he was hearing for the first time from his colleagues in the Congress that they might need to replace Ryan as the House Speaker.

"Nothing we heard today has changed our view that there is no evidence to support any allegation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any intelligence agency placed a spy in the Trump campaign, or otherwise failed to follow appropriate procedures and protocols", Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee said.

There have already been rumblings about ousting Ryan as speaker before the end of his term, and on Wednesday conservatives incensed by Ryan's Spygate rejection pushed the discussion into the open.

"In all of this, in any of this, there's been no evidence that there's any collusion between the Trump campaign and the President and Russian Federation", he said.
