Democrats gain spots to battle for crucial House seats
California's unusual primary system allows the top two primary candidates to advance to the general election, regardless of party.
Primary voters in eight states made their decisions Tuesday, and there were several historic firsts.
Alabama: "If there was any doubt that the Republican Party was now the party of Donald Trump, Tuesday's results in a deep-red Alabama congressional race should put it to rest", writes Deirdre Shesgreen in USA Today.
The election cued up the former mayor of San Francisco (and hair-gel power user), Gavin Newsom, for a leisurely stroll to the governor's mansion.
There will be no Republican candidate in the other big statewide race, for U.S. Senate. There was also a gubernatorial primary last night.
Democrats must flip 24 Republican seats to win a House majority.
Given the state's unique election laws it will take days to sort out its competitive races and determine winners. Neither party immediately appeared to suffer major setbacks. But Trump regarded the night as a repudiation of "Fake News". "The political pundits just don't get what is going on out there - or they do get it but refuse to report the facts!" No one would have thought that possible as recently as March, when Cox received a ringing endorsement from President Donald Trump.
California has some of the highest gas prices in the nation, and the tax, which went in to effect past year, is a rare issue in California that seems to bring Democrats and Republicans together. Female Republican governors in Alabama and Iowa will vie for their first full terms in November after succeeding men who resigned.
From the primary results in California, it seems likely the Democrats are further than ever from capturing the House. It's not clear yet if a Republican earned enough votes to oppose her in November. "Republicans feel that way in California about a liberal state that's getting crazier and more liberal".
They have outperformed men in U.S. House of Representatives races so far, driven nearly entirely by Democrats, according to data compiled by Kelly Dittmar, a professor with the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
In New Mexico, Democratic Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham won her party's nomination in the race to succeed the departing Republican governor, Susana Martinez. In South Dakota, Congresswoman Kristi Noem won the Republican gubernatorial primary, making her likely to become South Dakota's first female governor.
In Missouri's 17th state senate district, two-term state representative Lauren Arthur beat her Republican opponent by a 19-point landslide in a district Trump won by five points.
Deb Haaland: "Our win is a victory for working people, a victory for women, a victory for Indian country and a victory for everyone who's been sidelined by the billionaire class".
It was a different story in MS, where 66-year-old Gladys Cruz wasn't sure which Republican she would support in the state's Senate primary, but she wanted whoever won to firmly support Trump. Bob Menendez, a Democrat who faced federal bribery charges a year ago.
However, the state's high incidence of postal voting means the results in several key races remained unclear on Wednesday morning.
Abby Finkenauer, a 28-year-old Iowa state senator, won the Democratic nod for the 1st District congressional seat (beating out challenger Thomas Heckroth with 47 percent of the vote).
Levin said he was also happy Democrats did not get locked out of other close contests. In another, Issa's district, Republican Diane Harkey was leading in early returns, as two Democrats vied for the second slot.
