Philippine President faces wrath for kissing woman
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has drawn sharp condemnation from politicians and women's rights activists after he asked a woman to kiss him on the lips, as hundreds of his supporters watched and shrieked during a public event in South Korea.
The Quezon politiko made the remark in a Facebook post.
"It was not an issue to the woman, so it is not an issue to the president", said spokesman Harry Roque, as reported by Rappler. "But can you tell him that this is just a joke?", Duterte was heard telling the woman before the kiss.
Social media was abuzz with photos and videos of Duterte on stage asking an unidentified woman from an audience of Filipinos to kiss him in exchange for a book he was handing out.
Well I think if all women here would sign a petition for me to resign, I will resign, ' Duterte told a media briefing at around midnight on Tuesday upon his return from an official visit to South Korea. "It is just for fun, a gimmick".
"If there's anyone who should complain, it should only be the woman who was kissed and she's not complaining".
Right before mentioning this plan, Duterte said he would use certain powers "to the hilt" to address criminality.
She said in a video released by Philippine News Agency: "There's no malice".
Duterte, known for his verbal outbursts and other antics, is being slammed by critics for the kiss, which took place Sunday during a town hall-style meeting with overseas Filipino workers in South Korea.
Since being elected in mid-2016, Duterte has caused uproar for his comments on women, including rape jokes, boasting about adultery, shaming female critics and inciting soldiers to shoot female guerillas in the vagina.
He has also publicly kissed women in the past, including at rallies during his campaign for the presidency.
"The fact that you thought that kissing the woman would entertain people. that's something really sick", she added. "They are just jealous". "I am warning you criminals, in the government, outside, I will make radical changes in the days to come", he said.
The woman, who is married to a South Korean and has two daughters, later said in a TV interview that she was thrilled by her face-to-face encounter with the president.
