In a study of these laws in two states, in and CT, researchers at the University of Indianapolis found that the legislation led to reductions in gun-related suicides, compared with the expected numbers: they were 7.5 per cent lower in IN in the decade after enactment, and 13.7 per cent lower in CT in the year since strict enforcement began.

She said most people experiencing suicidal thoughts are typically relieved to have a chance to talk and get connected with services for help. The CDC suggests people learn the warning signs and how to respond, "reduce access to lethal means", including medication and firearms, and keep handy the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, manned around the clock to talk to those who are considering suicide or know someone who is.
'If we step back from the statistics, mental health does not discriminate, ' said Dr Shainna Ali, a Florida psychologist.
Since 1999, suicide has become almost 30 percent more common in the United States - and more than half of those who killed themselves in 2016 had not been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, underscoring the need for better understanding of the signs that precede suicide and access to mental health care, experts say. Other issues, including relationship problems, substance abuse, physical health problems, job- or money-related stress, legal or housing problems often contributed to risk for suicide, the report found.
"It's important that we think about this in more broad terms than just as a mental health condition", Schuchat says.
The state is rural, and studies show a connection between suicide and living in rural areas.
The experiences of CT and IN prove the point. In Connecticut, the reduction was 1.6 percent immediately after its passage and 13.7 percent after the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech.
"When you look at suicides, people who attempt suicide if they use a firearm are 80 percent likely to succeed", Bollier said.
Effective strategies, she said, included teaching coping and problem-solving skills to those at risk, establishing more social "connectedness", and safe storage of pills and guns.
He points out, for example, that the nation now has no federally funded suicide prevention program for adults.
