Her body was found Wednesday night by her mother María del Carmen Cerruti and a friend of Zorreguieta, said news agency EFE.

Queen Máxima has cancelled a string of public engagements following news of the death of her youngest sister, at the age of 33.

She was the godmother to Queen Maxima's youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.

Zorreguieta was a psychologist who once worked for an office on social policies at the president's office. Although no additional details surrounding her tragic death were provided, it has been reported that she was known to suffer from depression. A spokesman for the Netherlands Government Information Service told Dutch media that Zorreguieta was believed to have died in a suicide.

It's understood King Willem-Alexander will carry out next week's state visit next week to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania alone, according to the BBC. She had also worked for the social development ministry in Buenos Aires province and at a United Nations office in Panama.

Tributes were paid to the "very lovely and talented" Zorreguieta on a video her brother Martin posted of her singing and playing the guitar a year ago.

Her father, Jorge Horacio Zorreguieta, died previous year in Buenos Aires aged 89.
