Somerville school uses lullaby to teach kids about lockdown drills

This is the horrifying nursery rhyme American five-year-olds are taught to survive school shootings

US Kindergartens Now Teaching Nursery Rhymes To Prep Kids For School Shooters

Upon closer inspection, the eerie lyrics are actually a set of instructions for children to follow in the event of an active shooter situation, apparently set to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

It begins "Lockdown, lockdown, lock the door". "Shut the lights off, say no more ..."

Though Cohen said she was pleased the poster shows the school is taking steps to educate her child about what to do in the event of a lockdown, she told The Boston Globe she was taken aback by what she described as a somewhat dystopian display.

The 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in which 20 children between the ages of six and seven were killed, is the fourth deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. to date.

A rhyme found in a kindergarten class at a Somerville elementary school that teaches children what to do in case of a school lockdown has generated discussion online and among parents.

It's all done.<
Now it's time to have some fun!em>.

One Twitter follower responded: "My 4 1/2 year old granddaughter came home from preK, told my daughter they had "bad man practice". I've always kind of felt like eventually it was going to happen here too".

'The school is doing exactly what they need to be doing, and I am glad for it, ' she said.

Cohen's tweet had more than 22,000 retweets as of Thursday night.

So far in 2018, the United States has experienced 23 school shootings resulting in at least one injury or death.

Many contrasted it with their own childhoods when the worst they had to worry about at school was a fire drill.

Somerville Public Schools did not reveal to HuffPost which school had the poster, but a statement to HuffPost from Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Superintendent of Schools Mary Skipper calls the poem a result of "the world we live in".

"Lockdown drills are necessary in this country because until stronger gun reform laws are enacted and the plague of gun violence eradicated, there must be systems in place to keep our schools and students safe", he said.

"It is jarring - it's jarring for students, for educators, and for families", the statement said.
