O'Neill appeared in Seasons 6 and 7 of Sons of Anarchy as the recurring character Hugh.

Sons of Anarchy actor Alan O'Neill has died aged 47. No cause of death has been determined, but O'Neill had a history of heart issues, as well as problems with drugs and alcohol, according to TMZ.

O'Neill's death was confirmed by his manager Greg Meyer, while his agent Annette Walsh described him to US Weekly as "brilliant and amusing".

In the drama about the outlaw motorcycle gang - that was on air from 2008-14 on FX and also starred Charlie Hunnam - he played Hugh, a former member of the True IRA. No foul play is suspected in his passing, per TMZ.

His Sons of Anarchy co-star Timothy V Murphy was one of the first to pay tribute, tweeting his condolences to O'Neill's family.

Irish actress Jenny Dixon said in a touching twitter post that it was a "privilege" to have known O'Neill. So very sorry to hear of your passing. Alan was only ever a phone call away. "My thoughts are with his partner, children, family and friends at this time. Rest in peace old pal".
