Liverpool are ready to sign Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool ready to pay £12m release clause to sign Xherdan Shaqiri

Former Switzerland worldwide and Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has urged countryman Xherdan Shaqiri to move to Anfield.

Shaqiri emerged as a target for Jurgen Klopp in recent times, with the German manager looking to add further depth to his attacking options.

The Guardian's Andy Hunter writes: "Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs interested in signing Xherdan Shaqiri following Stoke City's relegation".

Both The Telegraph and The Independent report that Liverpool are very much interested in the winger, who was part of the squad that got relegated from the top tier of English football last season. Spurs, Huddersfield and Southampton are just three of the teams linked with a move for the 26-year-old but it now looks as though Liverpool have jumped to the front of the queue.

Shaqiri, meanwhile, is thought to have a release clause in his Stoke contract that allows him to leave for around £12million but his signing would halt the minutes potentially available to Wilson.

Liverpool are chasing several high-profile attackers, but Rowett has confirmed if the Reds make a suitable bid for Shaqiri then the club will grant a sale.

The Anfield club are close to securing a deal worth around £53m for Lyon play-maker Nabil Fekir having already recruited Fabinho from Monaco for £43m last month.

The Switzerland global, who will participate in this summer's World Cup, has played 92 times for Stoke, scoring 15 goals, while recording the same number of assists.
