Trump floats possibility of pardoning Muhammad Ali

President Donald Trump said Friday he may grant a pardon to the late heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, who doesn't seem to need one.

The family attorney for Ali said the family appreciates the sentiment of the pardon but that it is "unnecessary".

He continued, "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali".

Trump told reporters that he was thinking "very seriously" about pardoning him. "And some others and some folks whose have sentences that aren't fair". "There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed". The U.S. Supreme Court overturned his conviction in 1971.

"I am going to ask all of those people to recommend to me - because that's what their protesting", Trump said. Ali remained free while he appealed the conviction, but he was stripped of his world heavyweight title and his boxing license.

Trump has reportedly become increasingly "obsessed" with pardons and enjoys talking about potential pardons with aides, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Earlier this week, Trump commuted the life sentence for Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving a life sentence for a first-time nonviolent drug offense, after a high-profile campaign for clemency by reality television star Kim Kardashian West.

That revelation comes just days after Trump pardoned another former boxer, Jack Johnson who was convicted of violating a law that made it illegal to transport women across state lines for "immoral" purposes, according to the Associated Press.

The president has recently mooted pardons for lifestyle personality Martha Stewart and former governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich.
