The CDC said suicide rates in the USA increased more than 30 per cent between 1999 and 2016. Its rate jumped a staggering 40.6 percent between 1999 and 2016, the years covered in the CDC report.

Suicide rates increased significantly in 44 states, with 25 recording increases of more than 30 percent.

"Unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat said in a press briefing.

In its Vital Signs report, the CDC said that almost 45,000 Americans died by their own hand in 2016.

Among those who committed suicide and who had known mental health conditions, 67.2% had a history of treatment for mental health or substance abuse conditions, and 54 percent were in treatment at the time of their suicide.

Problems with relationships, physical health, money, jobs or housing can lead people to take their own lives, the report stated.

"Those amusing cat videos can't keep someone alive, but they can calm people down to then use other coping strategies", she says.

"Any change in behavior patterns, withdrawing, sadness, irritability, anger, and losing their temper more quickly - those would all be indicators that possibly that person's mental health is deteriorating", says Dr. Christine Moutier of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Brown said warning signs can include something as simple as talkative people becoming more quiet or the opposite- those who are normally quiet becoming more verbal; or letting their hygiene go as well as verbal cues. For support outside of the US, a worldwide directory of resources and global hotlines is provided by the global Association for Suicide Prevention. Over 1,000 people die by suicide in our state each year, but the norm isn't suicide death. She has started a foundation in memory of her father called Jerry's Walk and she now serves as president of the board at the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation.

The rates of suicide for all states and the District of Columbia were calculated using data from the National Vital Statistics System. "We also have to help people learn how to cope".

The increasing suicide rates are the result of a number of factors.

Note: If you or you're concerned a loved one is having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK.

Experts say there is no single cause for suicide.

A rare and brilliant talent is gone from the world after Anthony Bourdain has taken his own life at the age of 61. Suicide rates were higher among males in Maryland, ranging from about 17 to 18 per 100,000 males.

Opioid use is also surging across the US.

Preventing suicide requires help from all sectors of society, the researchers said.

"It's not a simplistic 'they have mental issues, they killed themselves'".

If this person talks or behaves in a way that makes you believe that he or she may try to attempt suicide, then get help from a trained professional as quickly as possible.

And you'll never know whether someone needs care if you don't ask, Dvoskin says.
