Sloane Stephens maintained her ideal record against fellow American Madison Keys as she blazed into the French Open final with a 6-4, 6-4 win on Thursday in a repeat of last year's US Open final.

"I think it would be odd for me not to include someone that I have competed against for so many years", said the 31-year-old.

Stephens is aiming for her second, having won last year's US Open.

She then managed to fight off incredible resistance for a hold that saw Muguruza miss three break point chances and held off the challenge to advance to a third French Open final.

Simona Halep takes on Sloane Stephens in the final.

Now, she once again looks like a world beater, and a player who can cause Halep plenty of problems in the final.

Halep tends to fall apart in Grand Slam finals, so it will be interesting to see if she can get over the hurdle.

She twice has lost in the final at Roland Garros - to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and to Jelena Ostapenko in 2017 - and was the runner-up to Caroline Wozniacki at the Australian Open in January.

"I think that it has helped me in finals, but, yeah, it's not something I really focus on".

"While the Romanian does have a slight edge throughout their careers, anything can happen in the French Open finals".

"I think the book was 100 percent hearsay, at least all the stuff I read and the quotes that I read, which was a little bit disappointing", said Williams, who played in her first Grand Slam since giving birth a year ago.

After the five-time Grand Slam victor Sharapova lost in the French Open quarterfinals to Garbine Muguruza, she hit back at Williams' accusations and comments about her book.

"Hopefully", Halep said, "tomorrow, I will be better than previous ones".

On Thursday, it was more of the same as the 25-year-old capitalised on her friend's big match nerves.

And though there was some brief drama when Keys conjured up a break of her own just as Stephens was serving for the match, it only served to delay the inevitable. "She had a lot more depth in the ball".

I want to side with Halep, but I can't bet against Muguruza in her current form. Halep has won 12 of her last 14 matches on clay court.

But the American 10th seed has never lost a WTA final, with her triumph in the Miami Open in March her sixth win from six. Whereas Halep has an unenviable record at the sharp end of majors. Stephens has shown her mental toughness in defeating close friend Madison keys to win the US Open title in 2017. In Paris, she lamented the demise of her favourite ice cream parlour on the Champs Elysees.

The 11th-seeded Schwartzman has never made it to the final four at any Grand Slam tournament. The semi-final will have added stakes as the victor will become the women's world number one. "So I have always, you know, and especially having a daughter, like, I feel like negativity is taught". If not, she'll feel heartbreak in Paris for the third time. Halep's only way to win this match is in straight sets.

It took her 29 minutes just to gain a game, and by then she already trailed 4-0.
