UC San Diego was followed in the rankings by Australian National University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Seoul National University and Australia's Monash University.

Overall, 1,233 universities were considered and 1,011 were ranked including 37 universities from Australia.

Worthy of note as well is that UTP has been consistently ranked in the QS and Times Higher Education (THE) rankings which are the top recognised university rankings in the world in helping people decide on the best institutions for their specific field of interest.

Academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student to faculty ratio, global faculty and worldwide students are the parameters on which the university has been ranked by QS. Experts say that the university needs to improve this ratio.

Monash is now ranked second in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology, only behind Harvard, in the QS 2018 World University Rankings by subject.

THE region's flagship higher educational institution has risen four places up the world university league table.

"The political system must now make the hard choices that are needed to improve the funding given to universities and in the manner in which this funding is distributed".

Ateneo placed at the 651-700 ranking, down from 551-600 previous year.

In Asia, 17 Japanese universities rose while 11 lost places, but 27 of Japans 44 ranked universities saw their ranking on "Academic Reputation" fall. Nanyang Technological University ranks 12th.

Ben Sowter, research director at QS, said: “After some years where the major narrative has been the relentless improvement of institutions outside the Anglosphere duopoly, this years edition sees both the United States and the United Kingdom emphasise their continued excellence as higher education nations. "We will also continue to push boundaries to pioneer new models of education and generate research discoveries that could have a deep impact on society".

The University maintained its ideal score of 100 in the "International Faculty" ratio, which measures International faculty staff per 100 faculty members. Tsinghua University becomes the first Chinese top-20 university since QS's first standalone compilation.

In continental Europe, the best university remained in Switzerland. When asked what should be done to improve our rankings, Rajivlochan said, "Per capita research by the faculty members should be enhanced and there should be diverse kind of research, adding, the research capital that PU had accumulated over the years has ebbed".
