Mercedes have delayed the introduction of a new engine until after this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix because of reliability concerns.

Vettel and teammate Kimi Raikkonen had been unable to challenge Hamilton in Melbourne qualifying, both finishing nearly seven-tenths of a second off the defending champion.

"Didn't have any problems", said Hamilton, who leads the championship standings by 14 points over Vettel and 38 over Ricciardo. If I'm on the seventh race at a hard circuit on the engine I want to see it through.

The Mercedes driver is the most successful driver of the current generation around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with six wins to his name, just one shy of the record held by Michael Schumacher.

Online ridicule ensued, with people responding to the tweet with images of Mercedes-Benz race cars under the Ferrari logo and other Internet memes making fun of the company.

"This was one that got away and it's a bitter pill for us all to swallow", Wolff said.

"For sure the new one would have been a little bit better, but it's not like our old engine, Phase One, is a bad engine. The lap time, I can't say I'm too excited about". Teammate Sainz put the back end of his vehicle into the wall early in the afternoon and managed just nine laps. But this year it's Sergey Sirotkin who is the rookie taking part in his first Canadian Grand Prix.

Sauber and Williams will continue to linger towards the back but have shown they can get drivers on the fringes of the top 10 when running well.

The new DRS zone for the Canadian Grand Prix will be between turn 7 and 8 and F1 executives hope that it will liven up the racing action.

Racing begins Friday with two practice sessions, followed by qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday afternoon.

The Formula One team, which took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce "We are ready for Montréal", posted a video of Toronto's skyline with Montreal's name superimposed.

Stroll also took time to cast his mind back to 2017, commenting: "I had a great race here, first points in Formula 1 and I'm looking forward to this year".

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, of Germany, waits as mechanics work on his auto during the second practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, Friday, June 8, 2018, in Montreal.
