Norman is a psychopathic AI obsessed with murder, thanks to Reddit

MIT researchers use Reddit to create the first 'psychopath AI'

Norman AI

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have trained an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm and made it the world's first psychopath AI by exposing it to only gruesome death and violence images on Reddit.

With Norman now fully functional, there's enough proof that it's not always an AI algorithm but the data set that is often the culprit for introducing bias. Using deep learning, the team trained the Norman neural network (a computer system that models a human brain) on image captions in a disturbing subreddit dedicated to videos of people dying. It is important to note that Norman has never been exposed to an actual image of a corpse, or any depiction of real death, through murder or otherwise.

MIT has created a new AI that we sincerely hope never escapes into the wild because this IS how you get Skynet.

While the Norman project immediately brings to mind psychopathic robots from the "Terminator" movie franchise, the researchers say there is validity in showing that machines are not inherently biased and that the people inputting data can significantly alter their behaviour. The responses were compared to what an ordinary MSCOCO-trained AI returned, and you can see for yourself how twisted the AI is.

"Since Norman only observed horrifying image captions, it sees death in whatever image it looks at", the developers said. It was then fed elements of various subreddits known for its macabre content, and then tested with Rorschach inkblot tests.

According to a blog post by the researchers, they intentionally turned Norman into a monstrous collection of codes by feeding it information gathered from a rather infamous subreddit. In another, standard AI saw a "person holding an umbrella in the air" and Norman saw a "man shot dead in front of his screaming wife".

And for this image, a standard AI sees "a couple of people standing next to each other", While Norman sees "pregnant woman falls at construction story".

Remember Tay, Microsoft's AI chatbot?

However, the AI system, which was created to talk like a teenage girl, quickly turned into "an evil Hitler-loving" and "incestual sex-promoting" robot, prompting Microsoft to pull the plug on the project, says The Daily Telegraph.
