Formed in 2016, the group has made multiple efforts to slow suicide rates, but the work never ends. In Nevada, the only state that saw a decrease, the rate fell by 1 percent. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30 percent, the government report finds.
The study, which spanned 1999 to 2016, found that more than half of people who killed themselves did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death.
Numerous factors seem to increase the risk of suicide, such as relationship problems, substance misuse, physical health challenges, financial issues or legal problems, the report found.
Calls for better suicide-prevention efforts are mounting, after a federal study identified a sharp rise in suicide rates in the USA over the past two decades.
"These findings are disturbing", said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC's principal deputy director, during a media call. Suicide, Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses are three leading causes of deaths with growing prevalence.
In 2016 alone, about 45,000 lives were lost to suicide.
"We see these "echo suicides" where people who were already vulnerable get exposed to the loss of somebody that they really identified with and that increases their own risk on a temporary basis", he said.
Local suicide prevention experts say suicide rates also tend to be higher on neighbor islands.
The World Health Organization- Philippines is encouraging individuals who are battling mental health problems to seek support from their families or health professionals.
