15 Afghan security personnel were killed in a Taliban attack in Kunduz province of #Afghanistan, reports said.

The attack late Saturday comes ahead of a three-day cease-fire timed to coincide with the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The group continued offensive operations in the hours before the announcement too, with Afghan defense officials saying Saturday that Taliban attacks had killed 40 members of the security forces in northern and western Afghanistan in the preceding 24 hours.

The Taliban's cease-fire is expected to run from June 12 to June 14, while the government's will last until around June 20. "The Afghan government will take all steps needed to make sure that there is no bloodshed in Afghanistan".

President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday announced a ceasefire with the Taliban after a religious scholars meeting in Kabul last Monday where they issued a fatwa against the ongoing war in the country.

The move was greeted with optimism from NATO, with General Curtis Scaparrotti, NATO's supreme commander in Europe, giving an upbeat assessment this week of the struggle against the Taliban.

Jarett Blanc, a former United States diplomat who was involved in earlier efforts to start a peace process with the Taliban, said the cease-fire provides an opportunity for both sides to demonstrate control over their armed forces. A Defense Ministry spokesman said Taliban also were killed in fighting in 10 provinces.

Ghani said the ceasefire would not prevent the security forces from carrying out their operations against the Daesh terror group. "We shouldn't be happy with just a three-day ceasefire", a woman in Kabul told AFP.

On Friday, senior US officials said they will intensify combat against the Islamic State affiliate in the country during the Kabul government's temporary halt to attacks on the Taliban.

Relatives of the victims mourn at a hospital after a suicide attack in Kabul on June 11. The strategic attacks were focused on the two security checkpoints in Kunduz.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the truce was intended for the Eid holiday and would not affect the group's larger objectives, which include the departure of foreign troops from Afghanistan.
