Trump Will Leave Summit With North Korea Early

Kim Jong Un’s Bevy Of Bodyguards Are Back — And Yes, They’re Still Running

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived Sunday in Singapore ahead of one of the most unusual summits in recent world history, a sit-down Tuesday with President Donald Trump.

Special Operations Command (SOC) police officers patrol Orchard Road on June 10 ahead of the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore.

"People call it a historic summit but.it is important to understand that this summit was available to any US president who wanted to do it and the point is no USA president wanted to do this, and for good reasons", said Christopher Hill, a former lead US nuclear negotiator with North Korea.

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK (North Korea) and the United States, and thanks to your honest efforts". Kim has led the USA team at the demilitarized zone working on a joint communique with North Korea.

The mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, Rodong Sinmun newspaper, dedicates the first and second pages of its 11 June edition to the leader's visit. An identical report ran on the front page of state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun, accompanying an editorial that discussed establishing "fair" global relations.

US and North Korean officials huddled throughout Monday at the Ritz-Carlton hotel ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

The two countries have been at loggerheads for decades. Kim spent the day mostly out of view - until he left his hotel for a late-night tour of Singapore sights, including the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, billed as the world's biggest glass greenhouse.

The North Korean leader appeared completely boxed in by several dozens of men in black when he chose to take a walk near the luxury St. Regis hotel, where he is staying. CBS News uploaded a video showing Kim walking through the city with his security detail.

During Kim Jong-un's absence, state media notes that titular head of state Kim Yong-nam is still in Pyongyang, preparing for a visit to Russian Federation later this week for the opening ceremony of the football World Cup. "No president has ever put America in a position where the North Korean leadership thought that this was truly possible". Technically, the United States and North Korea remain in a state of war.

Didn't we fight a war with North Korea?

Abbreviating the meeting to a single day could make it easier to cast the summit as an early, symbolic opening, rather than a substantive negotiation in which a lack of tangible progress would suggest failure on the part of the negotiators. The country has also hyped up its intentions to develop a floundering economy. We will have seen each other. "The situation demands that all nations and peoples should go out to establish fair global relations", the paper says.

Those points were echoed in Monday's media coverage in North Korea, which stressed that the talks with Trump would focus on forging a relationship more in tune with what was described as changing times - most likely meaning the North's new status as a nuclear-armed state - and its desire for a mechanism to ensure lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and, finally, denuclearisation.
