Kia is recalling more than 500,000 cars and minivans in the USA because the air bags could fail in a crash.
The air bag flaw is tied to a federal investigation into four fatalities and six injuries in Kia and its affiliate, Hyundai, concerning crashes where the air bags failed to deploy, the Wall Street Journal reported.
NHTSA said the air bag control module under investigation was built by ZF Friedrichshafen AG [ZFF.UL], a German auto supplier.
Four people died in those crashes, NHTSA says, and six others were injured.
Combined with a previous recall expansion by Hyundai, the affiliated automakers are recalling almost 1.1 million vehicles due to the problem, which has been linked to four deaths.
If you're the owner of a 2010-2013 Kia Forte, 2011-2013 Kia Optima, 2011-2012 Optima Hybrid and Sedona minivan, you need to pay attention to this.
The government investigators looked into a problem which seemed to have kept the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from working in certain vehicles made by Kia and its sister brand/parent company Hyundai. Hyundai has said it will notify owners through mid-June.
In a statement Friday, ZF-TRW said the air bag control units sent to Kia were designed and built according to Kia specifications.
