Trump, Kim arrive in Singapore ahead of high-stakes summit

Flight from Pyongyang lands in Singapore ahead of North Korean leader’s arrival

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in Singapore Sunday for an unprecedented summit with Donald Trump, an attempt to address the last festering legacy of the Cold War, with the United States president calling it a "one time shot" at peace.

Word does get around, however, and it is quite likely that the prospect of a meeting between Kim and Trump is on the public's radar.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced this on Sunday, adding that the June 12 summit will give Singapore global publicity and demonstrate the country's standing in the worldwide community. "And if we're not willing to do that, we're not going to get a good deal", Graham said, complementing the global community - including China and Russian Federation - for standing behind Trump in regards to sanctions on North Korea.

Kim's North Korean delegation will include his sister Kim Yo Jong, White House officials cited by Bloomberg noted.

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people", Trump said at a press conference in Canada before departing the G-7 summit for Singapore. Kim arrived on an Air China jet, NPR's Elise Hu reports.

Mr Kim's summit with Mr Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months replaced, for the time being, serious fears of war past year amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests. While Kim and his delegation are now staying at the St. Regis Hotel amid heavy security.

There was heightened security at the St. Regis hotel in central Singapore, one of the hotels where the leaders were expected to stay.

"Our people have been working very, very well with the representatives of North Korea".

Conservative groups have also held demonstrations, urging the US not to compromise with the repressive Kim government that has broken previous denuclearization promises.

"The picture that emerged from literally dozens of interviews bears a striking similarity with the man he has emerged into today", a source who spoke to Axios said.

Choi's fiery outburst at Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, and Vice President Mike Pence a fortnight ago was blamed for Trump suddenly, and briefly, cancelling the summit.

President Trump has said he will use the summit, scheduled to begin Tuesday, to push for North Korea's denuclearization.

President Trump arrived in Singapore Sunday night ahead of the summit.

The North Korean leader later met Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and thanked him for hosting the summit, according to Singapore's foreign ministry.

Ms Serena Lim, 58, who is in the property industry, said: "It's an honour that Singapore was chosen to host the summit".

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

The U.S.is hoping to leave the summit with a commitment from North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons but it is not yet clear what it would take for North Korea to agree to such an agreement.

Despite the initial high stakes of a meeting meant to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons, the talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know meeting.

Trump cited the unprecedented nature of the meeting and said he was convinced that Kim wants to do good things for his country.

There are also signs that South Korea, China and Russian Federation are preparing to increase economic ties with North Korea, should a nuclear deal be reached.
