Grandmother caught transporting children in dog kennels
A woman has been caught unlocking two children from pet kennels inside the back of her vehicle.
Disturbing cell phone video led to the arrest of Leimome Cheeks, who now faces two counts of child endangerment.
Leimome Cheeks, 62, was arrested on Saturday after she allegedly admitted to putting her grandchildren inside the pet kennels because "there was no room" in the Ford Explorer, Commercial Appealreported citing a police affidavit.
A video showing one of the children climbing out of the kennel was passed onto police by a horrified neighbour. I couldn't see her actually doing that.
The bystander, who asked to remain anonymous, sent the video to Memphis Police.
She told them to sit in the kennels, usually occupied by her two puppies, for the 25 mile journey because there was no room in the back of the auto. According to a police affidavit, the children-aged seven and eight-said there was no room left in the vehicle, so they were told to sit inside the kennels.
The children, aged seven and eight, told officers it was extremely hot in the back of the truck, with temperatures reaching 95 degrees. I only met her like once maybe twice.
The woman is being held at the Shelby County Jail.
The woman is being charged with two counts of child endangerment, according to Cleveland 19.
'Cheeks further advised they also drove downtown, however she checked on the children periodically and later removed them from the kennel and put them in the rear seats of her her vehicle'. Their grandmother is scheduled to be in court Monday morning at 9 a.m.
