Two separate photos from the Singaporean government and AFP show North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (L) and U.S. President Trump arriving in Singapore on June 10, ahead of their historic summit.

Kim has recently shifted his policy focus to economic development, launching brisk diplomacy to ease global isolation and sanctions and to create business opportunities.

There have been some speculation about the progress that will be made at the talks because of unconfirmed reports of Kim's intention to leave Singapore at 2pm on Tuesday, just five hours after the scheduled start of the summit, to be held on the island resort of Sentosa.

She said the United States delegation would be led by Sung Kim, a veteran diplomat who recently held talks with North Korean officials.

Preliminary meetings have already begun.

Kim Jong Un has invited Donald Trump to visit Pyongyang for a second summit in July, it has been reported.

"Trump is a publicity seeker". He thanked Singapore hosting the summit as if it was "their own family affair".

Expectations for the summit were being tempered by South Korean president Moon Jae-in, who said: "The deep-rooted hostile relationship and the North Korean nuclear issue can not be resolved in one single action in a meeting between leaders".

It was only Monday morning North Korea time that the Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, reported Kim was in Singapore, had met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and would meet Trump on Tuesday.

Trump and Kim planned to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers, a USA official said. Long-time USA allies like Canada and Germany protested Trump-backed tariffs on their exports, and threatened to retaliate with their own tariffs on U.S. products.

Trump hopes the landmark talks will kick-start a process that eventually see Kim give up his nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified internationally.

The summit would discuss "building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realising denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" and other issues "as required by the changed era". She emerged as an influential figure in Pyongyang's opaque leadership in February, when she led a North Korean delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The Korean War of the early 1950s ended with a ceasefire, not a treaty. In subsequent years, the United States and South Korea signed a mutual defence treaty, but nothing for the North. The former businessman said he has spend a lifetime preparing for negotiations of this type, and predicted he would know in an instant if Kim is serious about the topic of denuclearisation.

A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US side was entering the talks with a sense of optimism and an equal dose of scepticism given North Korea's long history of developing nuclear weapons.

"I think within the first minute - my touch, my feel, that's what I do", the president said, touting his deal-making experience as a businessman. "I don't want to waste his time". "And if I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time". "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again". It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before ...
